Breast Lift Techniques

Breast lift surgery is a highly personalized procedure. What might work for you might not work for another because different people have different desires and goals. There are several breast lift techniques and which one is best for you depends on how much sagging needs to be corrected, the proportions of your body and what your goals are regarding this procedure.

A breast lift or mastopexy procedure can improve the shape and symmetry of the breasts and restore breast projection as well.

You should note that mastopexy does not increase the breast size or round out the upper part of the breast. Breast augmentation however can help create the above results and it can be combined with breast lift for the optimum results.

Consulting with a Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon will help you know more about the different incision patterns for the breast lift procedure and which one would suit you best.

The breast lift techniques which are mostly used by Plastic surgeons include:

The Anchor incision or Inverted T

Also known as the traditional breast lift technique, it involves making three incisions:

  • Around the areola perimeter
  • Vertically down from the nipple to the breast crease
  • Horizontally along the breast fold (the more sagging the breast is the longer this incision will be)

This incision technique is ideal for women who have significantly droopy breasts as it allows the Plastic Surgeon to remove larger amounts of excess tissue and skin which makes it the desired technique for large-volume breast reductions.

The Donut Lift

This technique is also known as the circumareolar or periareolar breast lift. It involves the use of a single incision around the nipple border. The results of this technique are subtle since it limits the removal of excess tissue and skin to the area around the nipple only. The nipples can be elevated using this technique but the internal breast tissue cannot be rearranged.

The donut lift technique is ideal for women with mild degree of sagging.

The Vertical Breast Lift

The vertical breast lift is also known as the lollipop lift. It involves making two incisions, one around the border of the nipple and the other a vertical incision. The technique is ideal for women who have moderate degree of sagging.

 The Crescent Lift

The crescent technique is not commonly used as the other techniques. It involves an incision type whereby the incision lies just along the upper half of the areola. A crescent-shaped piece of skin is removed from above the areolar and the cut ends are then reattached with fine sutures.

This technique is usually combined with breast augmentation and is suitable for women with very small degree of sagging. It can also be used in correcting nipple asymmetry whereby one nipple is higher than the other.

These breast lift techniques can be combined with other procedures such as laser liposuction, tummy tucks and mommy makeovers.
