Botulinum Injection For Sweaty Hands
Sweaty hands are a remarkably common condition, which frequently makes those affected by it feel uncomfortable. It can even be quite embarrassing when you often have to hide the palms of your hands from other people, make up excuses as to why you cannot shake hands, or even have to constantly wipe your palms because they are sweating too much. This does not only kills one’s self-confidence, but it also affects productivity at work in addition to interfering with the person’s quality of life.
Excessive sweating, also known as hyperhidrosis, affects the daily lives of millions of people around the world. Although there is no documented cure for the condition, there are treatments which drastically diminish the condition by up to 90%. One of these treatments is Botulinum toxin, simply known as Botox® Botulinum injections can help keep sweaty hands dry and allow the patient to lead a normal life.
Botulinum Injection For Sweaty Hands Injection Technique
When over the counter antiperspirants do not work to control sweaty hands, the next best option is usually be Botox, which is an advanced medical technique used to manage hyperhidrosis symptoms.
Botox® is derived from Botulinum, a neurotoxin extracted from a food poisoning microbe (clostridium botulinum), which is safe for use in a medical environment, and by a medical doctor. Botox®, which is FDA approved for excessive sweating, works by blocking the nerves that are responsible for activating overactive sweat glands.
The botulinum toxin hereby is used in managing sweat caused by primary focal hyperhidrosis. In cases of excessive sweating, the nerves that activate the sweat glands are overactive, which leads to the overproduction of sweat. When Botox® is injected, it blocks these nerves, and when the nerves cannot signal the sweat glands, then the sweating is prevented.

The Botulinum Injection Process
a) The Consultation
The first step of having a hyperhidrosis treatment in Dubai using Botox, is to have a detailed consultation and examination in the clinic with our Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon or Dermatologist, to determine a tailor-made plan for each candidate.
b) The Surgery
The second step is then to either proceed right away or to schedule the botulinum injection procedure with the highly qualified and experienced Plastic Surgeon who is an expert in Botox® and anti-aging procedures. The procedure requires 30 minutes, and is performed at the clinic.
Prior to any treatment or surgery at the clinic, each patient is screened to ensure that it is safe to proceed with the procedure.
The procedure, which is minimally invasive, is done on an outpatient basis. Before the treatment, a numbing agent or ice is applied on the target area so as to alleviate any discomfort the patient might feel.
An iodine-starch test maybe performed on the palm of the patient’s hands so as to determine the area that is more prone to excessive seating. During this test, a povidone-iodine solution is applied and then cornstarch is added. On the areas that are more prone to sweat, dark marks are formed when the patient begins to sweat. This indicates where the problem areas are.
A grid is drawn on the palm indicating the target areas for the injections. The treating physician then injects the Botox right below the surface of the skin. Several injections, guided by the grid pattern, are made in this area of concern.
After the Botox® treatment for sweaty hands, the patient is allowed to go back to his/her day-to-day activities. An ice pack may be given to alleviate any discomfort.
The treating physician accompanies the patient throughout the entire process of recovery and healing, through scheduled follow-ups.
c) The Recovery
The patient can resume his/her normal routine as soon as the procedure is done. Scheduled follow-up sessions are recommended to check if the treatment is managing the condition effectively. It takes about a week for the sweating to stop on the treated area, and up to two weeks for the area to completely dry up.
To maintain the results, Botox injections for sweaty hands should be done every 8 to 12 months.
Although a botulinum injection procedure is straightforward, it is important that the right level of intervention or treatment is determined and that the procedure be performed by a qualified and expert Plastic Surgeon or Dermatologist. A potential candidate has to fit into certain criteria to be eligible for the procedure and should:
- Be an adult of 21 years and above.
- Have excessively sweating hands.
- Have tried other types of medication and failed.
- Not be taking blood thinners so as to avoid bruising.
- Have realistic expectations regarding the expected results.
- Be in good health both physically and psychologically.
What To Expect From A Botulinum Injection For Sweaty Hands
The main benefit of a botulinum injection is controlling excessive sweating from the hands. Since everyone is different, the expected results of a botulinum injection for sweaty hands might vary from person to person, but benefits typically include:
- Quality of life is improved.
- Confidence is restored.
- No more hiding hands.
- Can greet and shake other people’s hands without feeling embarrassed
