Breast Augmentation, also known as Augmentation Mammaplasty is one of the most popular Plastic Surgery procedures. It involves using breast implants to enhance the size and shape of the breasts as well as the symmetry.

Before undergoing any Plastic Surgery procedure, it is important to do your own research on that particular procedure. When it comes to breast augmentation using implants, knowing the different types of implants will help you in making a good decision on the type you would want and which best suits you as well as the questions to ask your Plastic Surgeon during the consultation.

Types of Breast Implants available

There are different types of breast implants and they include:

Saline breast implants

Saline breast implants are FDA approved for breast augmentation for women above the age of 18 years. They are filled with sterile salt water and provide a uniform shape, feel and firmness. If the saline implant ruptures or leaks, the sterile salt water will be safely absorbed by the body and naturally expelled. They only require a small incision since they are usually filled at the time of the surgery.

Structured saline breast implants

Structured saline breast implants are also filled with sterile salt water and in addition to this they contain an outer structure that can make the implant feel more natural. Also, by having an inner structure of saline their size can be altered via an inbuilt port. This type of implant is often used for breast reconstruction after a mastectomy is performed.

Silicone breast implants

Silicone breast implants are FDA approved for breast augmentation for women aged 22 years and older. They are the most common type of breast implant and are filled with silicone gel which has the feel of natural breast tissue.

If a silicone breast implant happens to leak the breast will still hold its shape since the gel will most likely remain within the implant shell or escape into the breast implant pocket.

However, with silicone breast implants you need regular visits to your Plastic Surgeon to make sure that the implants are functioning properly. Ultrasounds are done to assess the condition of the breast implants. If there is a doubt of rupture then an MRI may be required to confirm this as it is more accurate.

Round breast implants

Round breast implants can make the breasts appear fuller than form-stable implants with the higher profile options achieving more projection. They are also less likely to rotate out of place because they have the same shape all over.

Gummy Bear breast implants

These are form-stable implants because they maintain their shape even when the implant shell ruptures. The silicone gel inside the gummy bear breast implants has a thicker consistency than that of the traditional silicone gel implants. The form-stable implants are also firmer than the traditional implants.

Shaped gummy bear breast implants are tapered towards the top and offer more projection at the bottom. If the shaped implant happens to rotate it can lead to an unusual appearance of the breast and may require another procedure to correct the effects.

Smooth breast implants

Smooth breast implants have the softest feeling and they can move within the breast implant pocket mimicking a more natural movement.

Textured breast implants

With textured breast implants the scar tissue sticks to the implant making them less likely to move around and get repositioned.

Whether you have silicone or saline implants, it is import to monitor them and follow-up with your Plastic Surgeon for check-ups.
