As the years go by, aging catches up with us. Although aging is natural and can make someone feel more mature and wiser, a lot of individuals do not like the impact of aging on our looks. Most of us want to have that wisdom that comes with age but still look young or age gracefully.
Our skin, which is the largest organ in the body, is usually the first victim of aging due to its exposure to harsh environmental conditions, biological changes in the body and the effects of gravity. The face is normally the first to experience facial lines and wrinkles. There are numerous treatments out there that claim to be a solution for facial lines and wrinkles but they do not last as long as we would want them to. Facial lines and wrinkles can be diminished by a good old traditional facelift. A facelift surgery can turn back the clock to look more than 10 years younger thus resulting in the patient looking like a better and younger version of his or herself.
A facelift surgery, also known as a rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure which lifts and firms sagging facial tissue so as to restore a more naturally youthful appearance. It gets rid of excess skin, sagging skin, smooths deep folds as well as lifts and tightens the deep facial tissues.
Aging comes with its challenges such as the skin losing elasticity and loss of volume to the facial tissues. This results in jowls on the lower face, deep wrinkles and lose skin on the neck.
A facelift treats the following:
- Relaxation of the skin that causes sagging on the face
- Deepening of the fold lines between the corner of the mouth and the nose
- Disappeared or fallen fat from the face
- Jowls developing in the jaw and cheeks
- Excess fat and loose skin of the neck that can appear as a turkey neck or double chin.
Ideal candidate for a Facelift
The ideal candidate for a facelift should be someone who;
- Is healthy
- Is a non-smoker
- Is realistic
- Feels self-conscious about the way his or her face looks due to the sagging skin
- Feels that they look much older than they really are
- Feels that an aging appearance is negatively affecting their relationships or career
Types of Facelifts
There are 2 types of facelifts:
- Standard or Traditional facelift
This type of facelift is for individuals who exhibit a mild degree of sagging skin and jowling. It is a less invasive technique which allows a Cosmetic Surgeon to tighten deep facial tissues through shorter incisions. The incisions are located along the hairline above each ear and/or in the surrounding natural creases of the ear. Structural tissues around the cheeks are tightened to correct jowling, lifted, the jawline is refined and a tired appearance is rejuvenated through the incisions.
A mini-facelift helps in addressing early signs of aging before they become too pronounced. The procedure is performed by either local anesthesia with sedation or usually general anesthesia.
Standard or Traditional Facelift
A standard or traditional facelift fully addresses moderate to advanced aging around the face and neck. The surgery is more invasive than a mini-facelift and the results, more dramatic. The surgeon usually repositions the deeper tissues which are beneath the skin and removes excess skin to smooth creases, sagging skin under the chin, eliminates jowling and restores a naturally youthful contour to the neck and face. He or she does this through incisions which are located just behind the hairline, starting near the temples and around the front of the ear, hidden in the natural folds.
Results and Recovery
The results will begin to be visible once the swelling and bruising subside. Immediately after the facelift surgery, a bandage may be placed so as to minimize bruising and swelling and small tubes might be placed to draw off any excess fluid or blood. It takes about 2-3 months for the face to feel back to normal but you should look presentable within two weeks after the surgery. The final result should leave you feeling more youthful and confident about yourself.
