Mastopexy (Breast Lift Surgery)

Breast lift, also known as mastopexy is a Cosmetic Surgical Procedure that is designed to raise the breasts into a more youthful position. It involves removing the excess sagging skin and tightening the surrounding breast tissue to reshape and support the new breast contour.

Why a Breast Lift is done

Over time, a woman’s breasts tend to change losing their firmness, shape, and the skin around them loses its elasticity. These changes can result from several factors such as:

  • Weight fluctuations
  • Pregnancy
  • Breastfeeding
  • Gravity
  • Genetics
  • Aging

A breast lift can also reduce the sagging and raise the areolae and position of the nipples into a more youthful position. The size of the areola can also be reduced during this procedure to keep them in proportion to the newly contoured breasts.

However, a breast lift cannot significantly change the size of the breasts or round out the upper part of the breast. For individuals who are seeking to achieve fuller breasts, a breast lift combined with breast augmentation would be more appropriate.

For those who are seeking to have smaller breasts, combining breast lift and breast reduction would give them their desired results.

Good Candidate for a Breast Lift

You can be the ideal candidate for a breast lift surgery if:

  • You have sagging breasts that have lost volume and shape
  • Your nipples fall below the breast crease when they are unsupported
  • The nipples and areolae point downwards
  • The areolae have stretched out of proportion to the breasts
  • One of the breasts falls lower than the other

A breast lift surgery cannot be done on pregnant or breastfeeding women.

Breast Lift Procedure

A breast lift surgery is done as an outpatient procedure under either local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia.

Different breast lift techniques are available depending on the incision placement that can be used during the procedure and they include:

  • Around the areolae
  • Extending downwards from the areolae to the breast creases
  • Horizontally along the breast creases

Once the incision has been made, the Plastic Surgeon reshapes the breast tissue holding the new contour with stitches deep in the breast and reducing the size of the areolae if necessary. Excess breast skin is removed and the nipples are shifted to a higher position. The Plastic Surgeon then brings the breast skin together and closes the incision in layers to achieve the best scar possible.

Recovery and Results

After the breast lift surgery, the breasts will be covered with gauze and a surgical support bra. Drainage tubes might rarely be placed on the incision sites to drain any excess fluid and blood but they are removed within a few days.

You will experience swelling and bruising at the treatment site for about two weeks. Your breasts will also be  sore but pain medication is prescribed for this.

Avoid lifting, bending, or straining during the recovery period. To keep pressure off your breasts you should sleep on your back.

Your Plastic Surgeon will let you know when you can resume your normal routine.

The results are immediate but they are obscured with swelling. The final results should be visible within a few months.
