Is Cosmetic Nose Reshaping Right for You?

nose-reshaping

Rhinoplasty, which is commonly known as a nose job, is a Surgical Procedure that can shape your nose by modifying the cartilage or bone resulting in enhanced facial harmony and proportions of the nose.

Rhinoplasty is one of the most commonly performed Plastic Surgery procedures and people undergo it for different reasons such as to repair their nose following an injury, to correct a birth defect or breathing problems, or to alter the appearance of their noses because they are unhappy with it.

A Rhinoplasty Surgery in Dubai can treat the following:

  • Size of the nose
  • Profile of the nose with depressions or humps on the bridge
  • The width of the nose at the bridge about the position and size of the nostrils
  • Nostrils that are wide, large, or upturned
  • Nasal tip that is hooked, enlarged, upturned, or drooping
  • Asymmetry of the nose
  • Breathing difficulty or blockage of the nose from a deviated septum

Rhinoplasty that is performed to improve an obstructed airway needs a careful evaluation of the nasal structure as it relates to breathing and airflow. A deviated septum is one of the most common causes of breathing impairment and its correction can be achieved by adjusting the nasal structure to attain better alignment.

Good Candidate for Rhinoplasty Surgery

You may be the ideal candidate for Rhinoplasty surgery if you are experiencing the above-mentioned issues. You should also be:

  • Physically healthy
  • A nonsmoker
  • Having realistic goals in mind and a positive outlook for the improvement of your appearance

To undergo rhinoplasty surgery your nasal bone should be fully grown. However, in cases of breathing problems, rhinoplasty can be performed at a younger age.

Preparing for Rhinoplasty Surgery

If you are thinking about undergoing Rhinoplasty surgery, you should first consult with a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon who is an expert in nose surgery. You will discuss your concerns and goals and he/she will determine whether you are a good candidate for the procedure.

Your medical history will be taken and you will be instructed to stop smoking, avoid certain medications and herbal supplements two weeks before the surgery.

Procedure for Rhinoplasty Surgery

Rhinoplasty surgery is performed under either intravenous sedation or general anesthesia. These are meant to keep you comfortable and not feel any pain during the procedure.

There are different rhinoplasty techniques and the major ones are:

  • Closed rhinoplasty where the incisions are hidden inside the nose.
  • Open rhinoplasty whereby the incision is made across the columella which is the narrow strip of tissue that separates the nostrils.

The Plastic Surgeon works through the incision to gently raise the skin that covers the nasal bones and cartilages. This allows access to reshape the nasal structure.

An overly large nose can be reduced in size by removing cartilage or bone. Additional cartilage grafts may sometimes be required. The cartilage can be obtained from the septum, ear, or rib.

A deviated septum can be straightened and the projections inside the nose reduced to improve breathing.

Once the Plastic Surgeon has sculpted the underlying nasal structure to the desired shape, the nasal tissue and skin are redraped and incisions closed.

Splints and gauze packing may be placed to help support the nose as it heals.

Recovery & Results

The initial swelling and bruising will subside within a few weeks but it can take up to a year for the new nasal contour to fully refine. During this time, gradual changes in the appearance of your nose will be taking place.

You will be asked to avoid the following in the first couple of weeks:

  • Strenuous activities
  • Swimming
  • Blowing your nose
  • Excessive chewing
  • Facial expressions that require a lot of facial movement
  • Vigorous tooth brushing
  • Pulling clothing over your head

You will also be given other instructions to follow during your recovery period.

Most individuals can return to work or school within a week.

The results of rhinoplasty surgery are long-lasting but a healthy lifestyle and life-long sun protection can help extend the results of the new appearance.
