Difference between Upper and Lower Blepharoplasty

They say that the eyes are the windows to our souls, hence they are the defining feature of the face and the focal point during our interactions with others. The skin gradually loses elasticity as it ages and it is because of this, as well as the constant pull from gravity, that excessive skin collects over time on the lower and upper eyelids.

An extra fold of skin on the upper eyelids can hang over the eyelashes and may get in the way of your vision. On the lower eyelid, excess skin causes wrinkles and the descent of the midface may cause dark circles. There are times that the fat, which cushions the eyeball from the skull, can cause bulges in both the upper and lower eyelids. Blepharoplasty helps in treating these issues.

Blepharoplasty in Dubai

Blepharoplasty is an eyelid surgery that is done mostly for cosmetic purposes. It reduces bagginess from the lower eyelids and gets rid of excess skin from the upper eyelids. Blepharoplasty involves the removal or repositioning of excess fat and tissue resulting in a more youthful, refreshed facial appearance. It can also improve eyesight for older people who have sagging upper eyelids getting in the way of their vision.

Upper blepharoplasty mainly involves the removal of sagging skin and lower blepharoplasty concentrates on the removal or repositioning of fat deposits and skin which are under the eye.

Lower Blepharoplasty

Lower eyelid surgery mainly treats bags, puffiness and fine wrinkles in the lower eyelids. Although the upper eyelid surgery is performed using the same technique in most patients, the lower eyelid surgery can be performed using different techniques on different patients. This is because of the anatomy of the lower eyelids and the changes it undergoes during the aging process present unique challenges.

Some of the things that can lead to a lower eyelid surgery include skin laxity, very thin eyelid skin which can be wrinkled and bulging forward of the fat underneath the eye which causes puffy appearance of the eyes. All these factors can cause someone to look older than they are. During lower blepharoplasty, fat may be removed or repositioned or it may be transferred from other parts of the body so as to restore volume.

During the procedure, an incision is made below the lower eyelashes and the excess skin, fat and muscle are removed. The fat can be redistributed so as to minimize uneven swelling and puffiness. The incision can also be placed on the inside of the lower eyelid. The placement of the incision depends on your goals and personal preferences. The procedure is usually done with local or general anesthesia.

Upper Blepharoplasty

Upper eyelid surgery gets rid of excess fatty tissue and skin which create an appearance of droopy, inflated eyelids.  This happens through an incision which is hidden in the upper eyelid crease. The incision does not leave any visible scars since it is made in the natural creases of the upper lid. The remaining skin is then lifted and reattached resulting in a more youthful look. The surgery takes into account the patient’s age, race, gender and severity of the problem.
