The nose is one of the facial features that contributes to facial balance and harmony. Being positioned in the middle of the face means that any minor disproportion that it may have is easily visible. With the nose being a complex structure most Plastic Surgeons agree that rhinoplasty is one of the most challenging Plastic Surgery procedures. Expert rhinoplasty requires that the Plastic Surgeon be able to simultaneously correct nasal deformities while preserving nasal function to the maximum.
Individuals who did not achieve their optimal results from a rhinoplasty can opt to undergo a revision rhinoplasty to refine, redefine or redo either the functional or aesthetic outcomes of the initial procedure. Revision rhinoplasty can be performed years after a teenager had his/her rhinoplasty and has outgrown his/her nose, a previous nose job was done using the closed technique and didn’t result in the patient’s desired results or an ethnic rhinoplasty patient may be requiring finer readjustments.
The goal of Revision Rhinoplasty in Dubai is not only to improve function and breathing but also to achieve facial harmony by changing the size, shape or angle of the nose following a previous rhinoplasty that did not achieve the desired optimal results.
Individuals who are unhappy with their previous rhinoplasty should be realistic and understand that a revision rhinoplasty may not exactly be successful in completely correcting the aesthetic deformities which were not corrected in their previous nose job surgery or occurred as a result of the procedure. Scar tissue from a previous rhinoplasty can be an issue in revision cases and limit the final outcome since there is a possibility of it recurring even after successful revision rhinoplasty. Also, revision rhinoplasty often requires the use of cartilage to replace deficient or/and damaged cartilage that was removed in the initial rhinoplasty.
Revision Rhinoplasty Procedure
It is because of the above mentioned issues and more that revision rhinoplasty is usually performed using an open approach as the full exposure of the nasal structure allows the Plastic Surgeon to have complete visualization for the best outcome.
An incision is made beneath the nasal tip on the columella. The nose is then retracted backwards and the nose cartilage with carefully taking special care not to incise the cartilage that separates the nostrils (medial crura). For maximum exposure the flap is raised off of the nose giving the Plastic Surgeon access to reshape the nasal bridge, tip, nostrils or septum repair. This is followed by the redraping of the flap over the bone framework and the external shaping and contouring is completed. The incision is closed with sutures and an external cast or splint is placed over the nose.
Recovery and Results
Following revision rhinoplasty surgery a splint is usually applied to support the newly structured nasal framework for exactly a week. Bruising and swelling around the eyes, cheeks and lips is a common occurrence. You may also experience teeth numbness which usually resolves within 1-2 weeks. Although nasal swelling will resolve in a month or so, the nose itself will take about 1- 1.5 years to completely heal.
You should avoid blowing the nose in the first two weeks and use a nasal spray to keep the inside of the nose moist. Strenuous activities should be avoided for 3 weeks while sun exposure should be avoided for 6 weeks.
Although it may take up to a year to see the final results, they are permanent in the long run.
