Male Breast Reduction Procedure

Male Breast Reduction

Men naturally want to feel masculine, fresh and younger with real muscles protruding on their chest amongst other areas. This need can be escalated especially if one has been having weight fluctuations, loose skin, or enlarged breast tissue among other things. The results of not looking or feeling masculine enough for a man can lead to:

  • Losing of confidence
  • Self-consciousness
  • Avoiding activities that can make one show their chest, such as swimming

Gynecomastia surgery, also referred to as male breast reduction in Dubai, is a procedure that gets rid of enlarged breast tissue in men. The procedure, also known as male breast reduction is recommended to achieve a flatter, and more masculine chest contour. Enlarged breast tissue can be caused by genetics, hormonal imbalance or the patient might have taken certain medications thus making his breasts larger than normal.

Male Breast Reduction Technique Options

Male breast reduction, which is a surgical procedure, is done to remove extra fat and glandular tissue, thus restoring the chest to be firmer and flatter and appear more masculine.
Enlarged breast tissue in men can be treated in two ways:

  • With Liposuction; where small incisions are done either within the armpit or at the edge of the areola so as to remove extra fat and tissues at the breasts.
  • With Tissue Excision; this is done when the patient has stretched skin that is sagging around the breasts and the procedure cannot be accomplished by liposuction alone.

Gynecomastia Surgery Process

a) The Consultation

The first step of a Gynecomastia treatment in Dubai is to have a detailed consultation and examination in the clinic with our Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon, to determine a tailor-made plan for each candidate.

b) The Surgery

The second step is to schedule the male breast reduction surgery with the highly qualified and experienced Plastic Surgeon who is an expert in male breast reduction and cosmetic procedures. The surgery is performed in a hospital setting as an outpatient procedure using local anesthesia and sedation or general anesthesia and takes 2-3 hours.

Prior to the surgery, each patient is screened to ensure that it is safe to proceed with the procedure. This includes a pre-anesthetic consultation, blood testing to rule out hormonal imbalances, and to ensure the patient is a fit candidate for the procedure.

The treatment when done with liposuction is performed using either local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia via a small incision on each side of the breast. The incision can be located either under the armpit or at the edge of the areola so as to remove the glandular tissue or the extra fat through suction. Sculpting the chest contour to appear natural is also done.

If it is a more severe condition of stretched and sagging skin around the breast, the surgeon has to do a surgical tissue excision to remove the amount of skin or/and tissue that is of great amount which cannot be removed by a liposuction procedure alone. The incision is usually made around the edge of the areola or within the creases of the chest to avoid scarring.

The expert plastic surgeon accompanies the patient throughout the entire process of recovery and healing, through scheduled follow-ups.

c) The Recovery

A compression garment is given to the patient to wear so as to minimize swelling in the first two to six weeks or so depending on the healing process. Upon discharge from the hospital, the patient typically has minor bandages, which are changed the following day. Excessive exercise is prohibited for about three weeks. The patient can return to work after few days if the work is not strenuous.

Over a period of about 4 weeks, the patient would typically have several post-operation visits to the clinic to monitor the healing process.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do men go for breast reduction?

Breast reduction surgery for men is a procedure done to correct enlarged or overdeveloped breasts; a condition known as gynecomastia. It is estimated that up to 50% of men encounter some form of gynecomastia at some point in their lives.

Excess breast tissue in a man can cause his breasts to sag and the areola to stretch. Gynecomastia can be present in both breasts or one breast. This condition can affect a man’s self-confidence and cause emotional discomfort. Most males with gynecomastia tend to avoid certain physical activities to hide their condition. Male Breast Reduction in Dubai can correct this condition resulting in a more masculine chest area and improved self-confidence.

What causes men to have enlarged breasts?

Enlarged male breasts or gynecomastia occurs due to an imbalance of estrogen and androgen hormones. Naturally, men’s bodies produce minimal amounts of estrogen, the hormone responsible for breast growth. In cases where the body produces too much estrogen or the male has low testosterone levels (hypogonadism), his breasts may enlarge.

Obesity can also cause the male breasts to enlarge due to fatty tissue. This is known as pseudo-gynecomastia.

Certain medical conditions and medications can also cause male breast enlargement.

Does gynecomastia have stages?

Gynecomastia is classified in various stages and knowing them helps in getting the appropriate treatment option. There are four stages of gynecomastia which vary according to severity. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the stages are known as the gynecomastia scale. These are:

  • Grade I. Small breast enlargement without the presence of excess skin
  • Grade II. Moderate breast enlargement without the presence of excess skin
  • Grade III. Moderate breast enlargement with minor excess skin which causes the areola to be droopy
  • Grade IV. Marked enlarged droopy breasts with severely excess skin. The breasts mimic those of a female.

When is the right age to undergo male breast reduction?

To know whether you are at the right age to undergo gynecomastia you first have to be a good candidate for the procedure. This means you have to be in overall good health, have a positive attitude with reasonable expectations, and have the signs and symptoms of gynecomastia.

Although there is no specific age limit to undergoing gynecomastia, for teenagers it is recommended to wait at least two years to see whether the condition is persistent or just a passing phase. For older men, the issue of skin laxity has to be looked at and they should also not have any underlying health condition that could increase the risk of the surgery.

How is gynecomastia diagnosed?

Gynecomastia is diagnosed based on the signs and symptoms. A medical exam that includes an evaluation of the breast tissue, abdomen, and genitals is also performed.

Tests that can also be possibly done to diagnose gynecomastia include:

  • Mammograms
  • Blood tests
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans
  • Computerized tomography (CT) scans
  • Tissue biopsies
  • Testicular ultrasound

What are the pre-treatment guidelines for male breast reduction?

Before undergoing gynecomastia surgery, you will be given certain pre-treatment guidelines by your Plastic Surgeon. These include:

  • Medical evaluation including lab tests
  • Adjusting your current medication or start taking certain types of medications
  • Avoid smoking
  • Do not take aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, or herbal supplements as they can increase the risk of bleeding

What are the post-op instructions given after male breast reduction?

To have a healthy speedy recovery and avoid complications, you will be provided with certain post-op instructions by your Plastic Surgeon. They include:

  • The kind of diet you will be in, which will include fluids and gradually switching to a solid diet as well as avoiding alcohol and smoking for some time.
  • How and when to resume your activities. This includes taking brisk walks from the second day, when you can resume school and work, and avoiding strenuous activities until you are cleared by your Plastic Surgeon.
  • How to take care of the incisions
  • Follow-up appointments
  • When to take the prescribed medication
  • When and how long you will wear the compression garment
