Eyelid Lift (Blepharoplasty)
Over time, the skin tends to gradually lose its elasticity, mostly due to aging. This, in addition to the constant pull of gravity, causes the excess skin to collect on the lower and upper eyelids, which can lead to:
- Wrinkles and bulges on the eyelids
- Obstruction of vision due to the extra folds of skin
- A heavy feeling on the eyelids, especially the upper ones
- An older and tired look
The bulges which appear in the upper and lower eyelids can be caused by the fat that cushions the eyeball from the skull. Aging weakens the thin membrane which holds the fat in place thus letting the fat come forward into the lids like a hernia. To get rid of this bulge, a person will need an eyelid lift surgery in a licensed medical facility. The procedure is occasionally referred to as droopy eyelid surgery in Dubai, due to the downward sloping skin around the eye, but is most commonly called just eyelid surgery, eyelid lift surgery, eye lift or Blepharoplasty.
An eyelid lift, or Blepharoplasty, is used to surgically remove excess skin and tissue from the upper eyelids and reduce bagginess from the lower eyelids. The procedure is normally done for cosmetic reasons but it is also an effective way in which vision can be improved among older people who have sagging upper eyelids that get in the way of their sight.
Eyelid Lift Technique
The Eyelid lift procedure removes and tightens excess eyelid skin for a more youthful, and alert appearance. (Not to be mixed up with other eye procedures, blepharoplasty does not eliminate crow’s feet, dark circles under the eyes or other facial wrinkles. That is why the procedure is customized by combining it with other treatments such as fat injections, forehead lifts, filler injections or laser skin resurfacing.)
For the upper eyelids, the excess skin is excised as marked before surgery, and bulging fatty tissue is removed or the lining tightened. For the lower eyelids, surgery may be done using two techniques:
- Partial-incision eyelid surgery: In this technique the Plastic Surgeon makes a minor incision inside the lower eyelid so as to remove the excess fatty tissue and tighten the muscles. Afterward, he/she then softens the fine lines on the skin using a CO2 or erbium laser if necessary.
- Full-incision eyelid surgery: During this technique, which is more popular, a full incision is made along the eyelid just beneath the lashes. The surgeon then removes excess skin, fat and muscle through it. The cut line usually fades away after a short period of time. This technique gives permanent results and can be done to any eye shape.

The Forehead Lift Process
a) The Consultation
The first step of a Blepharoplasty in Dubai is having a detailed consultation and examination in the clinic with a Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon. This is to determine a tailor-made plan for each candidate.
b) The Surgery
The second step is to schedule the Eyelid lift surgery with a highly qualified and experienced Plastic Surgeon who is an expert in Blepharoplasty and other anti-aging procedures. This procedure requires 2 hours under general anesthesia for both the upper and lower eyelids. If only the upper eyelid procedure is performed, local anesthesia with sedation can be used and takes less than an hour.
Prior to the surgery, each patient is screened to ensure that it is safe to proceed with the surgery. This includes a pre-anesthetic consultation, blood testing, and to ensure the patient is a fit candidate for the procedure.
The surgeon typically starts with the upper eyelids. He or she will cut along the natural lines of your eyelids. Through the incisions, the surgeon separates the skin from the underlying tissue and removes the excess skin and fat and sometimes even muscle.
The cuts are then closed using very small sutures usually placed under the skin. Depending on the technique used, the lower eyelids may or may not require stitches. The upper eyelids stitches usually stay for five to seven days before removal.
After the procedure, the surgeon may recommend laser resurfacing to tighten the skin more.
c) The Recovery
After the procedure, a topical antibiotic ointment is applied following the surgery. On the first day, cold packs are applied each hour you are awake for about 10 to 15 minutes at a time so as to reduce the swelling and keep bruising to a minimum. On the second day, cold packs are applied every few hours.
Mild discomfort is expected immediately after the surgery. This will be accompanied by bruised and red swollen eyelids on the first few days. It usually takes a few weeks to completely heal and it is advised that you avoid wearing eye make-up up to two or three weeks after the surgery.
The Plastic Surgeon accompanies the patient throughout the entire process of recovering and healing through scheduled follow-ups.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between an eyelid lift and a brow lift?
The eyelid lift focuses on the eyelids. It involves removing excess fat and skin from the lids, making them less puffy and droopy. This results in revealing the natural contour of the eyelid and a more awake, younger-looking appearance.
The browlift on the other hand smooths the forehead and improves the positioning of the brows. It involves removing excess sagging skin and repositioning the underlying tissues and muscles, resulting in a more youthful appearance of the upper third of the face.
How will blepharoplasty improve my appearance?
The eyes are one of the major focal points of the face but they are also one of the first places to show the telltale signs of aging. These include crow’s feet, uneven or drooping eyelids, and dark circles or bags.
An eyelid lift surgery in Dubai is specifically designed to correct these issues concerning your appearance resulting in a revitalizing and younger appearance.
Why do people need blepharoplasty years before a facelift?
The eyes are one of the first areas to show the early signs of aging such as baggy and puffy eyelids and an eyelid lift can treat such issues to improve your appearance. These signs occur much earlier than wrinkles, jowls, and sagging facial skin, which are some of the issues that facelift surgery may help treat.
Undergoing an eyelid lift first can leave your face looking younger for years hence you can opt for a facelift later in life.
Is there an age limit for eyelid lift surgery?
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, more than 90% of individuals seeking blepharoplasty are above the age of 40 years with a majority of them being over 55. There are those with naturally hooded eyes and they seek treatment in their 20s and 30s but their reasons are different from those seeking eyelid lifts in their 50s and 60s.
Despite the age difference, the goal of blepharoplasty surgery remains the same: to provide a more rejuvenated and alert appearance.
What is the difference between the traditional blepharoplasty technique and the laser technique?
By using the traditional eyelid surgical method, the Plastic Surgeon can surgically remove and reshape the skin along the eye creating healthy and natural-looking eyes.
Laser eye surgery is performed using a CO2 laser, which serves as a cutting tool.
One of the major differences between the traditional blepharoplasty and laser technique is the downtime. Laser eye surgery has less bruising and swelling compared to traditional eyelid lift surgery.
Who will perform my blepharoplasty surgery?
Blepharoplasty can be performed by one of the below-mentioned practitioners:
- Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon who is an expert in eyelid lift surgery
- Ophthalmologist – and eye specialist
During the consultation, they will ask you about your medical history and your expectations. You will also be asked to undergo a physical examination, vision examination, and eyelid photography.
What is the recovery process after blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty involves a short recovery time. Swelling and bruising are typically worse on the day following the surgery but they disappear at a fast rate after that. Cool compresses help with the discomfort and light activities such as walking help in speeding up the healing.
Most individuals can return to work within 7-10 days after the procedure.
