Breast Augmentation With Fat Transfer

Breast Augmentation With Fat Transfer

During a breast augmentation with fat transfer procedure the surgeon uses fat cells harvested from one part of the body of the patient, and transferred to the breast in order to increase the size and sculpt the shape. The fat for the transfer is taken from the more fatty areas of your body like the stomach, the “love handles,” hips, lower back, or thighs. The fat is then removed with a gentle liposuction device designed to protect live fat cells. Once these fat particles are purified, they are injected back into the breasts through a very small incision. The procedure is therefore done in two steps:

  •  Liposuction: This is the first step of a breast augmentation with fat transfer procedure. The surgeon harvests fat cells from one part of the body (donor site), which is usually the thighs, hips or abdomen. The fat is then processed so as to remove non-fat tissues.
  • The second step is injecting the processed fat into the breast, hence the name fat transfer.

Breast Augmentation With Fat Transfer Process

a) The Consultation

The first step of a fat transfer procedure is having a detailed consultation and examination in the clinic with our Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon, to determine a tailor-made plan for each candidate.

b) The Surgery

The second step is to schedule the fat transfer surgery with the highly qualified and experienced Plastic Surgeon who is an expert in breast augmentation with fat transfer and other breast surgery procedures. Prior to the surgery, each patient is screened to ensure that it is safe to proceed with the surgery. This includes a pre-aesthetic consultation, blood testing and to ensure the patient is a fit candidate for the breast augmentation procedure. It is also important to perform a baseline mammogram and ultrasound.

The procedure, which takes 1.5 to 2 hours, is performed under general anesthesia in a hospital operating theatre.

During the process, markings are made on the donor sites and the breasts. Liposuction is used on the donor sites, where fat is collected in a sterile container using a device designed to protect live fat cells and then non-fat cells are separated from the fat tissue. The fat is then strategically injected in various areas of your breasts through small incisions using syringes. The incisions made at your donor sites are less than a centimeter and in the breast just point incisions to allow the fat transfer cannula (a small tube). The patient is discharged on the same day from the hospital or may require an overnight stay depending on the amount of liposuction performed..

The expert Plastic Surgeon accompanies the patient throughout the entire process of recovery and healing, through scheduled follow-ups.

c) The Recovery

You will be required to wear a surgical bra after the procedure for 2-4 weeks, avoid strenuous exercise and heavy activities. Over a period of about 4 weeks, the patient would have several post-operation visits to the clinic to monitor the healing process. Ensure that you maintain screening for mammograms and ultrasound  to rule out any ruptures, which are rare, but you can do it just for safety.

Precautions

Although a fat transfer procedure is straightforward, it is important that the right level of intervention or treatment is determined and that the procedure, whether surgical or non-surgical, should be performed by a qualified and Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon. A potential candidate has to fit into certain criteria to be eligible for the procedure and should have:

  • The breasts should be fully developed.
  • Enough donor fat.
  • Realistic expectations regarding the expected results.
  • Be in good health both physically and psychologically.

What To Expect From A Fat Transfer

The main benefit of a breast augmentation is the correction of noticeable breast deformities like volume loss or asymmetry. Since everyone is different, the expected results of a breast augmentation might vary from person to person, but benefits typically include:

  • Fuller, firmer breasts which appear natural.
  • Very little scarring and trauma to the breasts.
  • A contoured body after the liposuction.
  • Minimal risks of allergic reaction or rejection because the patient’s own fat cells are used.
  • Permanent reduction of fat in the area that undergoes liposuction.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between breast implants and fat transfer to the breasts?

Breast augmentation with fat transfer involves unwanted fatty deposits harvested from another body area such as the abdomen, hips, or thighs, purified and strategically injected into the breasts. This results in the breasts feeling naturally soft and also have natural movement. Although the results are ultra-natural in appearance, they are not dramatic. Breast augmentation with fat transfer in Dubai is for individuals who are looking for a modest increase in their breast size, usually one cup or less.

Breast augmentation with implants on the other hand involves enhancing the breast size with implants. The implants are usually made from silicone or saline and they can offer dramatic results depending on the implant size you are going for.

The effects of breast augmentation with implants is limited to the breasts only. With fat transfer, two areas are improved simultaneously. The procedure safely and naturally augments the breasts while contouring the donor area.

What is fat reabsorption?

Fat is a natural substance found in the body. The transferred fat in the breast is treated by the body just like other bodily fat.

The body naturally reabsorbs fat and it is estimated that about 50% of the fat injected during breast augmentation with fat transfer is absorbed by the body. That is why the Plastic Surgeon will inject more fat than is needed during fat transfer. This is to account for the fat that will be reabsorbed by the body. Injecting more fat during the procedure ensures that you get the best possible desired outcome.

Is breast augmentation with fat transfer long lasting?

The effects of fat transfer breast augmentation are permanent but there are several caveats such as:

  • The breasts will not remain the same size. They will be at their largest immediately after surgery, but will decrease in size within three months due to fat reabsorption. At this time they will have settled into a permanent size and shape.
  • The breasts will be affected by the natural aging process, meaning they will lose volume, elasticity, and sag.

What is fat necrosis?

Fat necrosis is a term used to refer to the death of fat cells. This occurs when fat fails to receive enough oxygenated blood during the fat grafting process, causing fat cells to die. The dead fat cells can form lumps or bubbles in the breast tissue.

The fat necrosis lumps might be painful and can cause changes in breast shape and appearance. Sometimes the lumps resolve on their own and they are not painful or cause any symptoms. If the lumps are painful or causing symptoms, they may need to be removed surgically. This will involve a Plastic Surgeon numbing the area with an anesthetic and using ultrasound to locate each lump. A needle will then be used to dissolve and remove the lump.

Can I combine breast implants with fat transfer?

Implant augmentation can be combined with fat grafting for a dramatic result which cannot be achieved by fat grafting alone and the ability to localize contouring more effectively with fat as compared to an implant alone.

Fat is also used in individuals who have very little breast tissue as a barrier between the overlaying skin and the implant to decrease the chance of rippling.

Combining implants with fat grafting during breast augmentation is known as Hybrid Breast Augmentation.

What is the recovery timeline like?

Recovery for breast augmentation with fat transfer usually depends on how many areas liposuction was carried out on.

The bruising and swelling will last for about 1-3 weeks, during which time you should avoid exercising. The breasts will feel sore or about a week or two but this is normal. Most people are able to return to work within the first two weeks depending on the kind of work they do.

Normal exercising is normally resumed within six weeks but your Plastic Surgeon will have to clear you on this.

It will take about 6 months for the fat transfer to fully take effect and the breasts to settle into their final shape.

When can I wear a bra after my procedure?

Most women are able to wear bras about 4-6 weeks after the breast augmentation with fat transfer procedure. It normally takes several months for the swelling to subside and for the breasts to acquire their new position. During this time, the breast size and shape continues to change hence it is wise to wait before buying a lot of bras of the same size.

If you purchase a lot of new bras before the final results are visible, they might not fit well or accentuate the new breast appearance once the swelling subsides.
