Breast Augmentation With Fat Transfer
There are women who have small breasts either due to genetics, or shrinking and loss of volume caused by weight loss, aging or pregnancy. This can lead to issues such as lack in self-confidence due to the size of the breasts.
Fat injection is usually a preference for women who opt for a small increase in their breast size but would still want them to appear natural rather than having implants. The process is also known as autologous fat transfer or fat grafting, where fat cells are harvested from one part of the body and transferred to the breast.
Breast Augmentation With Fat Transfer Technique
During a breast augmentation with fat transfer procedure the surgeon uses fat cells harvested from one part of the body of the patient, and transferred to the breast in order to increase the size and sculpt the shape. The fat for the transfer is taken from the more fatty areas of your body like the stomach, the “love handles,” hips, lower back, or thighs. The fat is then removed with a gentle liposuction device designed to protect live fat cells. Once these fat particles are purified, they are injected back into the breasts through a very small incision. The procedure is therefore done in two steps:
- Liposuction: This is the first step of a breast augmentation with fat transfer procedure. The surgeon harvests fat cells from one part of the body (donor site), which is usually the thighs, hips or abdomen. The fat is then processed so as to remove non-fat tissues.
- The second step is injecting the processed fat into the breast, hence the name fat transfer.

Breast Augmentation With Fat Transfer Process
a) The Consultation
The first step of a fat transfer procedure is having a detailed consultation and examination in the clinic with our Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon, to determine a tailor-made plan for each candidate.
b) The Surgery
The second step is to schedule the fat transfer surgery with the highly qualified and experienced Plastic Surgeon who is an expert in breast augmentation with fat transfer and other breast surgery procedures. Prior to the surgery, each patient is screened to ensure that it is safe to proceed with the surgery. This includes a pre-aesthetic consultation, blood testing and to ensure the patient is a fit candidate for the breast augmentation procedure. It is also important to perform a baseline mammogram and ultrasound.
The procedure, which takes 1.5 to 2 hours, is performed under general anesthesia in a hospital operating theatre.
During the process, markings are made on the donor sites and the breasts. Liposuction is used on the donor sites, where fat is collected in a sterile container using a device designed to protect live fat cells and then non-fat cells are separated from the fat tissue. The fat is then strategically injected in various areas of your breasts through small incisions using syringes. The incisions made at your donor sites are less than a centimeter and in the breast just point incisions to allow the fat transfer cannula (a small tube). The patient is discharged on the same day from the hospital or may require an overnight stay depending on the amount of liposuction performed..
The expert Plastic Surgeon accompanies the patient throughout the entire process of recovery and healing, through scheduled follow-ups.
c) The Recovery
The recovery tends to vary from person to person. One can resume work after two weeks if it’s not a strenuous work environment that requires heavy lifting. The healing time can vary from two weeks to a month, and one can take up light exercise thereafter.
Over a period of about 4 weeks, the patient would typically have several post-operation visits to the clinic to monitor the healing process.
Precautions
Although a fat transfer procedure is straightforward, it is important that the right level of intervention or treatment is determined and that the procedure, whether surgical or non-surgical, should be performed by a qualified and Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon. A potential candidate has to fit into certain criteria to be eligible for the procedure and should have:
- The breasts should be fully developed.
- Enough donor fat.
- Realistic expectations regarding the expected results.
- Be in good health both physically and psychologically.
What To Expect From A Fat Transfer
The main benefit of a fat transfer is subtly enhancing the breast size, but with a more natural look. Since everyone is different, the expected results of the procedure might vary from person to person and the procedure may need to be repeated for the desired volume, but benefits typically include:
- Fuller, firmer breasts which appear natural.
- Very little scarring and trauma to the breasts.
- A contoured body after the liposuction.
- Minimal risks of allergic reaction or rejection because the patient’s own fat cells are used.
- Permanent reduction of fat in the area that undergoes liposuction.
