Arm Lift / Brachioplasty
Aging combined with genetics can sometimes cause someone to feel uncomfortable in his or her own skin as they play a major role when it comes to developing sagging skin. Losing a substantial amount of weight can also cause someone to have extra skin especially on the underarms.
Some of the reasons that may lead a person to want to change the appearance of his or her underarms include;
- Sagging skin on the upper arms
- Extra fat and skin on the upper arms
- The need to have toned and defined upper arms
- Lack of muscle definition on the upper arms
Brachioplasty, also known as arm lift surgery in Dubai, can help in solving these issues through surgical rejuvenation of the upper arms. Brachioplasty is a surgical procedure to remove skin and fat from the upper arm, reducing skin redundancy that makes clothing fit improperly or makes you feel uncomfortable in short sleeves or sleeveless tops. Occasionally, the surgery is also called arm reduction in Dubai due to the fact that excess fat is removed, resulting in a leaner more defined looking arm.The procedure reshapes the underlying portion of the upper arms from the elbow to the underarm region, and as a result reduces the circumference. The technique aims to give more firm, toned and well-defined upper arms.
Arm lift Technique
Brachioplasty surgery can markedly improve the appearance of your arm. The combined effects of aging, gravity, fluctuations in weight, and a loss of skin elasticity all contribute to a loss of tone in the arms as we age. The type of arm lift will depend on your specific needs and amount of laxity. By assessing the excess skin and excess fat (if any is present), the expert surgeon determines which procedure is best for you. The incisions required are determined by the severity of your condition. Minimal skin excess may be treated with an incision in the armpit alone. More severe laxity is treated with an incision from the armpit to the elbow. For people who have significant amounts of fat.
An Arm lift procedure aims to:
- Tighten the underlying supportive tissue which define the shape of the upper arm
- Reduce excess sagging skin, also known as bat wings
- Reduce localized pockets of fat which are in the upper arm region

The Arm lift Process
a)The Consultation
The first step of having arm lift or arm reduction surgery in Dubai is to have a detailed consultation and examination in the clinic with our Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon, to determine a tailor-made plan for each candidate.
b)The Surgery
The second step is to schedule the arm lift surgery with the highly qualified and experienced Plastic Surgeon who is an expert in Arm lift and anti-aging procedures. Prior to the surgery, each patient is screened to ensure that it is safe to proceed with the surgery. This includes a pre-aesthetic consultation, blood testing and to ensure the patient is a fit candidate for the arm lift procedure.
The procedure typically takes 2 to 3 hours under general or local anaesthesia with sedation. During the surgery general anesthesia or intravenous sedation is administered. Once it has taken effect, incisions are generally placed on the armpit or on the inside of the arm as marked before surgery. An incision may extend from the underarm to just above the elbow or just at the armpit. The length of the incision and pattern depends on the location and amount of excess skin to be removed. Excess fat may be treated with liposuction.
The underlying supportive tissue is then tightened and reshaped with internal sutures. Lastly the skin is smoothed over the new contour of the arm. The incisions are closed with either absorbable sutures or stitches which will be removed within one to two weeks after the arm lift. The results are visible almost immediately after the arm lift procedure despite the swelling and bruising.
The expert Plastic Surgeon accompanies the patient throughout the entire process of recovery and healing, through scheduled follow-ups.
c)The Recovery
Dressings and bandages may be applied to the incisions and you might wear a compression garment, or your arms may be wrapped in an elastic bandage so as to minimize swelling following the surgery. Drainage tubes may be placed under the skin temporarily so as to drain excess fluid.
You will be given instructions on how to take care of the surgical site as well as any medication you might be given. This is to make the recovery safe and fast.
Normal activities should most likely be resumed after about 3 weeks and the patient can return to work or normal daily activities within 1-2 weeks following the arm lift procedure. The overall results of the procedure are long lasting as long as you maintain a good diet and a healthy lifestyle.
Over a period of about 4 weeks, the patient would typically have several post-operation visits to the clinic to monitor the healing process.

Precautions
Although an arm lift procedure is straightforward, it is important that the right level of intervention or treatment is determined and that the procedure, whether surgical or non-surgical be performed by a qualified and Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon. A potential candidate has to fit into certain criteria to be eligible for the procedure and should:
- Be adults who have significant upper arm skin laxity
- Have relatively stable weight
- Not have any medical conditions that would impair healing or increase risk of surgery
- Have realistic expectations regarding the expected results.
- Be in good health both physically and psychologically.
What To Expect From An Arm Lift
The main benefit of an arm lift surgery is more toned and defined upper arms. Since everyone is different, the expected results of an arm lift might vary from person to person, but benefits typically include:
- More toned upper arms
- Increase in self-confidence
- Arms proportionate to the rest of the body
- Reduction in the arms circumference
Frequently Asked Questions
Where are the incisions placed during an arm lift?
Depending on the surgeon’s preference, the incisions can either be placed on the back of the arm or the inside of the arm. The length of the incisions will depend on how much skin will be removed. The incision can extend from the axilla (underarm) to just above the elbow. Excess fat may be removed through liposuction or directly excised.
How much skin is removed during Brachioplasty?
The amount of skin removed during Brachioplasty is determined by how much excess skin there is. Pinching together the loose excess skin from the armpit to the elbow and marking it determines the width of the area.
Removing too much skin will put too much tension or tightness on the skin and may result in the skin edges separating.
In cases of individuals who have had a massive weight loss and have so much loose excess skin, the excision can extend through the underarm down to the side of the chest and past the elbow to the forearm. This is known as an ‘L’ arm lift/ Brachioplasty.
Can other procedures be performed at the same time as an arm lift surgery?
Individuals who have lost a significant amount of weight usually have a lift of different cosmetic procedures that they desire to do to improve their contours and appearance. It is common for Plastic Surgeons to recommend combining some of these procedures to save on time and the recovery process. An Arm Lift Surgery in Dubai can be done in a safe setting as liposuction, tummy tuck, thigh lift, and breast augmentation.
How do I know which I need between liposuction and an arm lift?
The quality of skin laxity and the amount of fat determines if liposuction, an arm lift, or both will best suit you.
Liposuction alone may be performed if have mild to moderate stubborn fat deposits around the arms and you have good skin laxity.
If you have excess skin, arm lift surgery is the best option for you. An arm lift and liposuction may be combined if you have both excess fat deposits and sagging skin around your arm.
How long will my arm lift surgery take?
An arm lift procedure takes between one to two hours under general anesthesia depending on the extent of the surgery. At Al Shunnar Plastic Surgery Dubai, we customize each procedure to meet your specific goals and anesthetic desires.
If the arm lift surgery is combined with other body contouring procedures, it will take more hours. An arm lift is performed as an outpatient procedure and you can go home the same day.
How long until I’m back to normal after an arm lift?
The extensiveness of the surgery is proportionate to the recovery. After the procedure, you will experience normal swelling and some bruising but this resolves in about 2 weeks. Wearing a compression garment within the first week will help reduce the swelling. Most individuals return to work within a few days after the arm lift procedure and to their normal activities after six weeks.
