Eyelid surgery or Blepharoplasty is a procedure that can help restore a naturally youthful, refreshed appearance to aging and tired-looking eyes. This procedure can be performed on either the lower eyelids, upper eyelids, or both.
The eyelids have the thinnest and most delicate skin compared to the other parts of our bodies. It is because of this that aging signs begin to appear around the eyes earlier than in most other areas. Aging, sagging, or drooping eyelid skin can make an individual look older than he/she is or cause a tired, angry, sad appearance even when the person is feeling great.
What Eyelid surgery can treat?
Eyelid surgery is designed to counteract and treat the following aesthetic concerns:
- Puffiness in the eyelids caused by fatty deposits
- Eye bags
- Drooping lower eyelids
- Fine wrinkles and excess skin of the lower eyelids
- Sagging or loose skin that folds or disturbs the natural contour of the upper eyelid and may sometimes impair vision
Good Candidate for Eyelid Surgery
Ideal candidates for eyelid surgery are individuals who have the above-mentioned issues and also be:
- Healthy with no medical issue that can impair healing
- Without serious eye conditions
- Nonsmoker
- Realistic and have a positive outlook about the results of the procedure
Preparing for Eyelid Surgery
Eyelid surgery involves first consulting with a Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon who is an expert in the procedure.
During the procedure, you will discuss your surgical goals, medical conditions, drug allergies, previous treatments, any problems that you may have with your eyes, and current medications including vitamins, supplements, and drug use.
Your Plastic Surgeon will then evaluate your current health status, discuss your options for eyelid surgery, recommend the best course of treatment and potential results, and take you through the potential risks and the type of anesthesia to be used.
At this point, you can ask any questions that you might be having.
Eyelid Surgery Procedure
During the eyelid surgery procedure, either general anesthesia or local anesthesia with intravenous sedation may be used.
The incisions used during this procedure are designed so that the resultant scars are concealed within the natural structures of the eyelid area.
Correcting the upper eyelid involves making an incision within the natural crease on the eyelid. This allows for the repositioning or removal of fat, and removal of excess skin.
The lower eyelid can be corrected by placing an incision just below the lower lash line. Through this incision excess fat can be removed or repositioned, the muscle tightened and excess skin removed.
A Transconjunctival incision can also be used to correct the lower eyelid. It involves the incision being created on the inside of the lower eyelid. Through it, excess fat is either removed or redistributed but the skin is not removed during this technique.
The incisions are then closed with sutures.
Eyelid surgery in Dubai can be done alone or it can be combined with other procedures such as a Facelift, Browlift, or both for a more comprehensive facial rejuvenation. A facelift will address sagging, jowling, and wrinkles on the neck and cheeks. A brow lift will address deep furrows and sagging skin above the eyes. Occasionally fat transfer can also be performed simultaneously to enhance the area.
Recovery & Results
After the eyelid surgery, you will experience some soreness, swelling, and bruising for about one to two weeks and your eyelids will feel unusually tight. Keeping your head elevated and applying cold compresses can help alleviate the discomfort. It may take about 2 weeks for you to be presentable in public but it will take a few months for the healing to be completed.
Practicing sun protection and using dark-tinted sunglasses until you are completely healed is important.
The results of eyelid surgery are long-lasting and they appear gradually as the bruising and swelling go down. As the results become visible they reveal a smooth, better-defined eyelid region, and a more rejuvenated and alert appearance.
