Breast Reduction Procedure

Breast Reduction

Breast Reduction

Some women tend to have naturally large breasts that can cause them discomfort like back, neck and/or shoulder pain. When the discomfort becomes unbearable, they may want to seek treatment to change this particular feature. Other reasons a woman may want to seek treatment for overly large breasts include;

  • Having unproportioned breasts
  • Being shy or self-conscious whenever she is outdoors
  • Lack of self-confidence
  • Feeling uncomfortable accompanied with chronic pain
  • Poor posture

Breast reduction is often recommended for women who want to reduce the size of their breasts because they have been giving them both emotional and physical stress. This surgery is important both functionally and aesthetically. A breast reduction removes excess skin and breast tissue to make the breasts more proportional to the rest of your figure.

Typically referred to as Breast reduction in Dubai or reduction mammoplasty, the procedure is a cosmetic surgery that is used to remove extra fat and glandular tissue from the breast while tightening skin to produce smaller breasts that are more comfortable and in healthier proportion to the rest of the body.  The aim of the surgery is to reduce the size of the breasts in addition to making them less heavy, and to give them a naturally appealing shape.

Breast Reduction Technique Options

The breast reduction techniques used can vary depending on the size of the breasts. There are two main types of incisions used to do the breast Reduction procedure and they are;

  • The Lollipop technique: This is where the incision made during the surgery goes around the edge of the areola downward to the breast crease.
  • The Anchor technique: During this technique, the surgical incision goes around the edge of the areola, straight downward, and then along the bra crease. The horizontal incision at the crease can be shorter or longer depending on the amount of excess skin and breast to be excised.

During the surgery, an incision is made around the areola and downwards to form a keyhole. The procedure is used to remove excess fat, tissue and skin which reduces the size of the breasts. Very rarely, if the breasts are overly large, the nipple and areola can be removed then reattached on a higher position after skin grafting is done for the breasts.

The surgeon makes the breasts achieve symmetry although shapes and sizes vary with every case.

The Breast Reduction Process

a) The Consultation

The first step of a breast reduction procedure is having a detailed consultation and examination in the clinic with our Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon, to determine a tailor-made plan for each candidate. You will be required to give out medical history, especially if you have had a lump removed or your family history. Even emotional issues can be addressed regarding your physical condition.

b) The Surgery

The second step is to schedule the breast reduction surgery with the highly qualified and experienced Plastic Surgeon who is an expert in breast reduction and anti-aging procedures. Prior to the surgery, each patient is screened to ensure that it is safe to proceed with the surgery. This includes a pre-aesthetic consultation, blood testing and to ensure the patient is a fit candidate for the breast reduction procedure. Depending on the age the patient may be required to do a screening mammogram and/or ultrasound

The procedure, which is performed under general anaesthesia takes two to four hours, is done in a hospital setting and the patient is usually discharged on the same day, or she may spend a night depending on her condition.

During the surgery, the surgeon makes an incision around the nipple then downwards on the breast that takes a keyhole shape. Extra fat, tissue and skin is then removed from the breasts and then the nipple is repositioned. Drainage tubes may be attached to drain excess fluids, then the incisions are sutured. A surgical bra will be recommended by the doctor to aid in the healing process. Upon discharge from the hospital, the patient typically has minor bandages, which are changed the following day, and new ones placed.

The expert Plastic Surgeon accompanies the patient throughout the entire process of recovery and healing, through scheduled follow-ups.

c) The Recovery

The patient will need one to two weeks off from work. During the recovery period, strenuous activity should be avoided, but normal day-to-day activities can typically be resumed after 1 week. Lifting heavy objects too soon after the surgery is advised against for at least a month so as to allow healing. There will be some discomfort, but a pain reliever will be prescribed by the doctor.

Over a period of about 4 weeks, the patient would typically have several post-operation visits to the clinic to monitor the healing process.

Precautions

Although a breast reduction procedure is fairly straightforward, it is important that the right level of intervention or treatment is determined and that any procedure, whether surgical or non-surgical be performed by a qualified and expert plastic surgeon. A potential candidate has to fit into certain criteria to be eligible for the procedure and should have:

  • Be a non-smoker or reduce or stop smoking three weeks prior to surgery
  • To be bothered by large breasts
  • Breasts that limit physical activities or causes pain
  • Realistic expectations regarding the expected results.
  • Be in good health both physically and psychologically.

For the avoidance of doubt, a breast surgery clinic in Dubai or a breast clinic in Dubai that performs a breast augmentation, breast reduction, breast alteration or breast reconstruction requires a Plastic Surgeon, which is what our experts are trained in. This is not to be confused with a breast surgeon or breast clinic that performs a breast removal (mastectomy), which is typically performed by a General Surgeon in coordination with an Oncologist.

What To Expect From A Breast Reduction

The main benefit of a breast reduction procedure is to relieve the discomfort caused by large breasts, especially on the neck, shoulders and back. Since everyone is different, the expected results of a breast reduction might vary from person to person, but benefits typically include:

  • Self-confidence.
  • Being able to engage in some activities that were once restricted by your condition.
  • No more pain medication if you were taking any due to your condition.
  • Proportionate breast size and shape.
